The children who chose to do horse-riding this week were very lucky on Sunday. The sun was shining and the rain had disappeared, so they were able to ride outside!

After a very successful first week of workshops, the children were keen to start on a different project for the second week. This has involved script writing for film-making, story-making with photos, dancing and singing for a musical and making puppets.

Before the children went on their final excursion to London, they did some research about the city. In class, they made posters of different landmarks in London such as Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square.

Second week

After a great day out to Leeds Castle on Tuesday, the children spent Wednesday in their English Workshops. In the afternoon, each class took it in turns to present their final pieces to the rest of the students.

On Thursday, the children spent the afternoon in their chosen clubs: Art, Dance and Sports. In the Art club, the children created a large-scale version of the english board game, Snakes & Ladders. In the dance club, the children perfected the dance routine to Michael Jackson's 'Thriller'!

In the evening, the children experienced a traditional Scottish Ceilidh, with live music and dancing!

On Saturday, the children went to London. They went on the London Eye where you can see for miles across London.

Before the excursion, the children had chosen their own groups - so they all went shopping on Regent St with their friends!

Yesterday, the children had a great afternoon playing hockey, swimming and doing arts and crafts. Some of the children had chosen to go horse-riding and play tennis.

After the activities, the children went into their English Workshops. This week, the children have chosen between shadow puppets, photo story, film-making and musical theatre.

Egg Drop

The Eggcellent Egg Drop Challenge known also as crakin’ fun for international students aged 9-14 years is a game that the kids played last night. It involved two challenges: one person from the team had to throw an egg as far as possible without it cracking and - one person from the team had to parachute an egg out of a dormitory window and land it within the designated landing area. Points were given for distance, throwing style, design and gracefulness in flight. Have a look!

Last night we hosted the Woldingham Olympics. The kids played dodge ball, did the Jacob cracker challenge, made javelin paper airplanes, tested their limbo skills, took part in a 100m wheelbarrow relay race, threw paper plates discus and when through a gymnastics routine, showing off their flexibility and strength!

Yesterday in the evening the kids had a casino night. They played cards, were challenged by the staff in various mental and physical tasks and could even have their fortune told!!!

School grounds

Marden Park, the home of Woldingham School, has a very long and turbulent history. The estate dates back to the year 950, when it was established by a Saxon nobleman, Byrhtic. Through the ages, the estate changed hands frequently, at some point it was even owned by the Tudor family!!! The old house was destroyed completely in a fire in 1879 and the present house was built on exactly the same site. Finally, after WWII, the Marden Park was sold to the Society of the Sacred Heart, which eventually established here the present Woldingham School. The school grounds are spacious and beautifully located among the hills of Surrey, with amazing gardens and many lovely spots. Have a look!

Horseriding

The students at DS Woldingham have an opportunity to learn or practise their horse riding skills in the nearby riding school. The horses are well-trained and accustomed to working with children.

Big Zoo Quiz

Today's English lessons are very atypical. The kids are playing Big Zoo Quiz, a language game in which they work in mixed ability groups. Each group is presented with a variety of lexical and grammatical challenges, for which points are awarded. The group with the biggest number of points gets a special prize!!!

Last night everybody played DO OR DIE. The kids were challenged to do some pretty amazing things - walk around with unusual head pieces, build a newspaper tower or beat the staff in a basketball game.

One of the Sunday night attractions was the Bonzai game. The kids were given situations or event on which they had to bet on the outcome. Some of the most involving included student races, deciding how long someone can be on a prank call without saying anything or which AL would be fastest around the playground.

A trip to Canterbury

Today in Canterbury the kids had a chance to admire the amazing cathedral and learn more about the history of England. Afterwards, they strolled on the streets of the medieval part of the town.

Today in the afternoon the kids had a break from lessons and took part in all sort of social activities. One of them was counting how many people can get into a car. And the magic number..... is going to be revealed tomorrow. Keep counting!!!

Meanwhile, some of the students were busy in the kitchen making sweet surprises.

And afterwards everybody joined the percussion workshop to practise their sense of rhythm and learning to work in tune with others.

Busy Wednesday in Woldingham

Wednesday is always a very busy day in Woldingham.
New students are arriving and Hilary and Hannah
are greeting them and helping them to settle in.

Last night the jury handed out W'Oscars to students and staff members in a variety of categories, including The Funniest Student, the Loudest Student, The Best Artist, The Best Dancer, The Most Helpful Student, The Funniest Staff Member and The Sportiest Staff Member. The audience went wild and was cheering while the awards were being given out.

Trip to Brighton

The kids spent a wonderful day in Brighton. They went to see the amazing Sea Life Centre and then enjoyed the sun on the beach. Afterwards, everybody went on a shopping spree and came back to Woldingham happy and with bags full of new stuff.

Students' reflections on the first week with DS Woldingham

As the first week of discovery summer comes to a close I start to think about all of the things we have done, we went to the tower of London and to Westfield’s and we went to Guilford spectrum ice skating.

Guilford spectrum was really fun because we all bonded over our lack of skating skills and the amount of times we fell over, at the end of the day we all really enjoyed skating and really enjoyed spending time learning new things about each other.

London was amazing and buzzing with people, the tower of London was really interesting and fun and we really enjoyed it, after the tower we all went to Westfield’s which was fun, my group went into all sorts of shops like accessorise and bought huge amounts of pick and mix. On the coach back we muddled over the events of the day and unanimously decided the trip was a success.

We also did conversation club where the student hosts asked the student’s questions about Guilford spectrum and the students had to tell the hosts in English.

In the evenings we have lots of activities for example Cluedo and discos where we play games and dance like crazy people. We all enjoyed the disco because it was an excuse to dress up and have fun.

We had a fashion show where we got split into colour groups and the groups were given 2 bin bags with an item in them and the group had to create an outfit around that item for example: a cowboy hat or vampire fangs.

On one evening we had an activity called do or die where each group was given an activity and they had to do it. For example get a sweet out of a bowl of flour using your mouth.

In the new Whollywood production - Tea at Woldingham - the queen comes to visit Woldingham. During her stay, the royal crown gets stolen and Jimmy Bond, aided by the students of Discovery Summer, is looking for the thief. Come on Tuesday to our Workshop Presentations to see the film and find out who stole Her Majesty's crown!

Woldingham Fashion Week Opened!

Tonight in Woldingham the kids and the staff have opened Woldingham Fashion Week during which a wide range of unusual outfits will be presented.

The judges decided to warm up the audience with a short dance.....

Justyna, one of the teachers, was wearing a breath-taking Vampire costume whereas Leti, the Spanish group leader, chose something more moderate and wore an amazing geisha outfit.

Last night, during the evening activity - DO or DIE - the kids were quizzed on a number of subjects and if they couldn't give the correct answer they were challenged to do a playful dare. These included putting a face into a plate full of cream, eating a lemon, chewing down a Mars bar or tasting extra spicy crakers. It's hard to say who had more fun... the staff or the kids...

A trip to Guildford

All the kids went on an ice-skating trip to Guildford today and everybody had a lot of fun, racing on the ice under the careful eye of the activity leaders.
